The deepfake threat to documents

Generative AI can now produce convincing fake documents, certificates, and identity papers in seconds. Deepfake technology extends beyond video — it can generate realistic-looking contracts, notarised documents, and bank statements. The technology is accessible to anyone with a browser, making document fraud industrially scalable for the first time.

Why visual inspection fails

Traditional document verification relied on visual cues: letterheads, signatures, stamps, and paper quality. AI-generated documents replicate these perfectly. Even trained fraud investigators struggle to distinguish AI-generated documents from originals. We need verification methods that go beyond what the human eye can detect.

Cryptographic verification as the answer

Qualified timestamps and electronic seals provide machine-verifiable proof that a document was created by a specific entity at a specific time. Unlike visual elements, cryptographic proofs cannot be replicated by AI. A deepfake document will not have a valid qualified timestamp because the fraudster cannot access the QTSP's signing keys.

Building deepfake-resistant workflows

Organisations should establish policies requiring that all official documents carry a qualified timestamp and electronic seal. Recipients should verify these cryptographic proofs before acting on any document. This creates a simple rule: no valid timestamp and seal means the document cannot be trusted, regardless of how authentic it looks.
